Spas -- The Same, But Different Regardless of whether we are talking about day spas, destination spas, hotels and resorts with spas on site, or highly specialized spas like medical spas, they all have one basic premise in common: they are committed to making you feel well and be well. Their approach will always be to rejuvenate you, refresh you, and give you space and time to renew yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally.

With this premise at the foundation of whatever specific routes a spa takes to get you where you want to go, it is important to understand that everyone experiences spas differently. This is because the spa’s starting point and focus is you, so your experience at the spa will be as unique as you are. A group of people at a spa at any one time could have dozens of "agendas" or purposes for being there -- fitness, nutrition, weight control, spiritual renewal, medical treatments, rest and relaxation, being pampered and pleased, and on and on.

Some spas choose to cater to as broad a range of these interests as possible. Others narrow their focus to offer in-depth services that respond to only a few of these needs. You may decide to go to a spa for a very specific reason and, having the opportunity to expose yourself to some of the other services offered, might easily expand the experience beyond what you anticipated it would be. Spas are prepared to offer these expanded horizons to first-time visitors, longtime guests, and everyone in between.

That said, not every spa is right for every need, every taste, or every personality. Matching who you are with the spa takes some research and consideratin. However, with the wide selection of locations, programs, and atmospheres available at the thousands of spas now in business, it is well worth doing.

The best way to prepare for a spa visit is to know what to expect, and imagine yourself there. Having chosen the spa, there are some measures you can take to be sure that your expectations are consistent with the reality you will find, and that is bound to make your stay more beneficial and enjoyable.
